Honey’s Story

By Donna Kiser, Best Friends Sanctuary, Inc.

My name is Honey and I am a very young female dog.  For some unknown reason, my owner abandoned me.  I didn’t know how to find food for myself or take care of the puppies that I was carrying. I tried to make friends with new people but they all chased me off.  They didn’t need another dog, especially one expecting puppies.  I roamed around Jamestown for a week or two and I was so hungry, cold, and scared!  The ends of my ears were already bloody and sore from frostbite.   I learned not trust people anymore.

A nice man noticed me and started leaving food for me.  He has three dogs already and did not need another one but the Lord guided him to help me.  He contacted Best Friends Sanctuary, Inc. for help.  They loaned him a have-a- heart trap with the condition that he would check it and watch out for me.  I was too scared and wary to get in it, even if it did have the great smell of good food!  Becky, a Best Friends member, dedicated herself to try to help me.  She set up a dog house with cozy bedding which felt great on those cold nights.  Then she moved the bedding into a crate.  I was familiar with the scent of the bedding so I felt at home in the crate.  The timing was perfect.  Becky was there in a flash and shut the crate door!  I was trapped!  Oh, I was so scared and it was to be the coldest night of the year.

I was transported to a new location, a stall in a barn with a dog house.  My crate was put in there too so I had a choice. My new life wasn’t bad.  I had food, water, and a roof over my head.  The humans seemed to be nice but they were a little leery of me and I was leery of them since I had been chased so much.  Ah, but I enjoyed a good nights sleep at last!  My new foster mom checked on me in the morning and made sure that I had all that I needed.   She checked on me again at 11 A.M. and found that I had delivered two puppies!  They were cold and crying and I wasn’t sure what to do.  There was not time to get to know her now.  She put a leash on me and took me and my pups to a warmer place.  The pups were put on a heating pad to warm up and I could continue my task of delivering the rest of my pups.  Foster Mom had not done this before nor had I but the two of us made a good team and we learned as the day progressed.   Two pups were still born but I had 8 that were alive.  I began to nurse them and take good care of them.  Foster mom made sure that I had lots of good food as my ribs were showing and I would need extra calories to feed my pups as well as myself.  I was also wormed so that the food was used only for me and my pups.

The next day, I went on my first walk on a leash.  There were four other dogs who showed me the ropes and set a good example for me.  Hey, I thought, this isn’t half bad!  It felt good to stretch my legs.  Now it’s back to taking care of my pups.  Two died today but I still have six to take care of.

I’ve gotten into the routine of walking and going potty outside.  I only had one accident in the house and that was the first night after my pups were born.  I’m now walking off leash as I don’t leave my foster mom’s side.  I’m enjoying myself and trying to play with the other dogs.  I’m having fun!

In six weeks, when my pups are old enough, we will make a 10 hour trip to a new shelter where my pups and I will find forever homes. I am thankful that I met people who cared enough to help me.

Now a word from Best Friends:  We have helped 2676 dogs find good homes. This is the only reward for our hard work. Best Friends is sure this wonderful young dog and her pups will find loving homes.  As you can see, it takes more that one person to save an unwanted pet.  If a Fentress County citizen sees a dog or pup in need of help, please be kind and catch it when you see it.  The volunteers at Best Friends are not dog catchers and by the time you call us, the animal is gone.  We are a small group of volunteers who are trying to make a difference in Fentress County.  Since we only have five foster homes and no shelter, we rely on kind people like you to help take care of the unwanted pets until we can transport them to new homes.  Will you be the kind person who helps an unwanted pet?

Honey was extremely blessed that someone cared about her and contacted us.  How many other strays starve to death, freeze, are hit by cars, or killed by other animals?  Please spay or neuter your pet so that their puppies are not abandoned like Honey.

Our answering machine number is 879-6806.  Please call if you need help finding a home for a canine.   If you can work with us, we can help you.   We also have a low cost spay/neuter program for low income families.  Please pick up a form at Dogwood Animal Hospital, Upchurch Animal Clinic, D & D Auto Parts, or the Department of Human Services.   Please put a collar on your dog with its Rabies tag.  If it wanders off, this will help to get it back to you.  Thank you!

Please do not abandon your pet.  It is against the law and it is a horrible end for your pet. This was a good story but most of the abandoned pets are not this lucky.  Some are killed and eaten by coyotes; others starve or die of thirst as they cannot take care of themselves as you have always taken care of them.  Others are hit by cars.  Some are found by rescuers but are too afraid to come to them.  Still others join up with other feral dogs and form packs that attack livestock and possibly people.

Best Friends Sanctuary, Inc. (Fentress Area Humane Society) main goal is to encourage owners to spay and neuter their pets to stop the explosion of stray cats and dogs.  We offer low cost neutering for low income households.   We also try to assist in placing abused, abandoned and unwanted pets.  We have frequent fundraisers to vaccinate, worm, and neuter our foster animals.   Please show your support for Best Friends by attending these events.   Any moneys that are donated to us are tax deductible as we are a C 501 not for profit organization.

Any donations can be sent to: Best Friends Sanctuary Inc.,  P.O. Box 1038,  Jamestown, TN   38556

Ruger was abandoned by his owners and left to starve to death. The landlord called us when he found him and he was taken to a veterinarian.  He weighed 45 lbs.  After six weeks of good food and some TLC in a great foster home, the court awarded Best Friends custody of Ruger and we were able to adopt him out to a good home. He weighed over 100 Lbs. at that time. He has since put on more weight!
