Adopted Dog in Ohio

Miss Gizmo

,

Marley

Hi There Becky,
I adopted Marley today from a shelter in Cleveland Ohio.  We are so happy to have him and he is such a sweet puppy.  I think both his sisters were already adopted when I met Marley today.  I will attach a picture from my cell phone even though the lighting is not very good.  It was the only one I could get him to sit still in.  Thank you so much for taking him in and caring for him so well  .  He has very good manners so far. If there is anything else you can tell us about him that would be great.  We have a full house here with two boys(11 and 12 years old) and me and my boyfriend.  Marley will be very well loved.  Thanks again, for your generous care.     Bonnie

Northeast Ohio SPCA- Our Sister No Kill Shelter

What was your impression of the NEOSPCA? This question was answered by an adopter.  See below:

The place was clean and all the animals seemed to be well cared for, food, water, clean cages. The place is old and in an old neighborhood but the volunteers really seem dedicated. There were a lot of people looking at dogs and one man had adopted a little Shepard/collie looking dog –very little. Another woman had just adopted a dog but I did not see it. I did not get to talk to Anita who was very busy and they had Mia in the back room area so she would not get taken by anyone else. So we got to see this area also. This area was warehouse/garage like and full of stuff but neat and clean—old---.Mia had food and water. We were told she had been given flea stuff and wormed. Their policy is that if the dog does not work out---call and bring it back---no refund but pick out another within six months.

One volunteer was busy cutting apart newspapers into single sheets to use in the cages, other volunteers were walking the dogs outside in a grassy area (apartment building lawn) out back and carried poop bags to clean up right away. The hallway was lined with cages of all sizes (empty) with clean bedding inside. There was a room that I think is where they  spay or neuter--- old, not your dream facility but I think adequate—did not get to see inside as the lights were off and door mostly closed.

There were lots of people looking at the puppies and young dogs—in fact I was surprised by all the activity. They had a sign out front saying “the new puppies have arrived” The women who helped us were very nice and seemed to care.

You have to fill out an adoption form stating “no research” etc and an acknowledgment that the dogs have come from TN and you must have your Vet check them etc.

One volunteer was scrubbing and sanitizing crates and cages. All the dogs were in cages that were roomy enough and indoors-no outdoor runs. They were warm and dry.

I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about this place before I saw it – wondered about the fact that there were so many dogs up here needing adoption –how could they be doing this – well I guess because it is in a highly populated area and they keep costs down and have lots of volunteers. So I would say you can rest easy knowing your pups are being well cared for and given a second chance – not at the Hilton but at Motel Six.

Letters and Pictures from Homes in Ohio

My husband and I just adopted a puppy from the Northeast Ohio SPCA and they provided your e-mail address for any questions we might have. We are attaching a photo of Colby, a seven week old male Lab mix, black, with a few spots of white on his nose and paws. We picked him up on Thursday, Jan 8, and plan on taking him to our local vet this Saturday (tomorrow). Any information that you could provide us with about him that might be helpful to us would be appreciated. Colby was a little shy when we first met him, but in just these few days has really come out of his shell!

We had recently just lost our dog Scruffy after almost 17 yrs, and the house just seemed empty. We do have one cat, Troubles(13yrs), who is a bit apprehensive about his newly adopted brother, but we're sure that they'll become good friends!
Anyway, we just wanted to say thanks - Colby really has brightened up our home!
Hope to hear from you.

I am writing to let you know my wife, Leslie, and I adopted Luke about a month ago from the Northeast Ohio SPCA..He is doing exceptionally well and is in good health. He seems to be settling into our home with a great deal of ease.. Probably helped by the love and affection he gets from every person and dog he comes into contact with.. He has finished his vaccinations for the time being and seems to getting on with life like any other happy dog.
We were wondering if you have heard from the people who adopted his brother, Bo. Given that we are in the Cleveland area, we assume that Bo is somewhere nearby and we would like to arrange for the puppies to
meet up!

Hi Donna,
As I was cleaning today, I came across my records from my adoption of "Martin" in March of 2007. I live in Cleveland, Ohio and I was in a shelter looking for a kitten for a friend of mine. Well.......I fell in LOVE with "Martin" and I HAD to go home and bring in my two other dogs to meet him and see how they all interacted.  Needless to say, I now have three beautiful, loving, spoiled, big babies.  "Casey"...sorry, the name "Martin" had to go, it just did not fit him,  Casey was the most gentle, sweet big baby in that cage. When I approached him, he put his big paw on me in the most gentle manner.....my heart was his! I love them all dearly, but Casey....he is just so needy and I sneak in as much extra loving as I can. The other two get jealous, but Casey can outrun them LOL.....Casey and my male 5yr old German Shepherd, Kai, do laps in my fenced in back yard. Casey and my 7 yr. old female shepherd mix Chloe, spend hours together and she cleans him and lays with him like she is his mother. When they are outside, they play together more like a wrestling team, with Casey grabbing her by the scruff of the neck. She has plenty of padding so it works out well!
Please understand. Casey is a character. He is a thief. He silently will take items and run outside with them. My cell phone was missing for about a week this winter......I did find it.....in the snow...of course I now have a new cell phone. He does not like to poop in public. It was a momentous occasion when my daughter and I actually saw him in the way back part of the back yard, in the overgrown part (on purpose overgrown) and he was seen actually pooping! It is now one of "our family jokes". "I saw Casey poop today!". Casey loved to rearrange my plants......meaning as I plant them, he unplants them.
When we first got Casey, he was a tad on the skinny side. Now you would think he would eat anything.....oh no,not Casey. He was and still is particular about his dog food. My dogs only ate dry food. Quality brands, but dry. Needless to say, they now all three eat the dry food with either canned dog food mixed in (Casey gets half the can, the other two get a quarter can each) twice a day...or I make dog food for them....a rice, chicken, turkey, liver, gizzards, mixture or combo of any of the above mentioned ingredients and this is added to the dry food. I cook for them more than I cook for myself. My friends just shake their heads at me.
Casey is a yellow lab/husky mix we think. He has a blue eye and a brown eye. The vet figures he was about 10 months to a year old when we got him, so he is now about 3.and he is about 80 pounds! all muscle!  I always wondered what his past was. He is so strong and in the beginning, he would try to escape out of the fenced in area in our backyard. Or when at the park,he was always heading to the wooded area, with or without the rest of his pack. My daughter and I joked that he was heading back to Tennessee......he is extremely fast and  agile......we have a 6 foot fence, otherwise I am sure he would have jumped it, just because he could . LOL. He does not like loud music or rain. he has a dog house and he uses it. he prefers mostly to be outside.......you just don't know how I have to coax him inside, except if it is going to rain or if the neighbors are louder than usual. . And he knows ahead of time if it will rain. He is my weather forecaster. He loves the snow!  He also prefers it under 80 degrees..... His range is 20 thru 80 degrees.  I promise to send pictures....and if we are in the area...I will bring him to see you all. We still stop in at the shelter we got him from and show him off. Actually, I take all three. I love them all and show them off as much as I can. Most places I can handle them by myself. They all love going to the vet. I cannot take them to a pet store by myself, they get too excited. I found out really quickly, I can take one of them places with me, but I can never leave one at home alone. They are truly a bonded pack. If we are somewhere and one of them is not with the others......they look for the other one til they are all together again. For instance, getting their nails trimmed. It works out better if we separate the one being worked on, but then the other two need to be with the missing one and they go look for him or her.
I cannot tell you how much love and happiness Casey has given me. I bought a tag from an animal group for Casey that says "I rescued a human". That says it all. Thank you for rescuing Casey for me.

Hello again,
My name is Jeanne and last Sunday my husband Phil and i adopted Casey from the local shelter. We went last Saturday and were very apprehensive at her shyness we talked about it going back and forth still up in the air on what we should do. We decided that if she was still there the following day we would introduce her to our dog (a 13yr old golden named sky) and see what happens. When we arrived at the shelter Sunday morning she was still there and still very timid. We decided to go home and get sky to see how they would react to one another. Becky it was so meant to be, once the two met Casey became a real puppy dancing around wagging her super long hound tail it was love at first sight for all four of us. We took her home and she immediately became comfortable. We re named here Belle and the two dogs and our cat fit together beautifully. To let you know a bit about us... My husband and I Phil got married in October of last year and bought our first house in November it all happened so fast. I've rescued dogs all my life primarily Golden's and Phil grew up in up state new york with the love for bloodhounds. He had been secretly looking for blood hound puppy's ever since i mentioned getting another dog to help keep sky a bit younger. It was luck and a bit of fate i believe that made me stop in the shelter. Phil works in a hospital and I run a restaurant 2 miles away from our home (the very flexible schedule i have is perfect for a puppy). If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
Thanks have a happy day

Hi, Just touching base real quick to see if we have the correct address.
On 1/15/09 we adopted a boxer mix from the NE Ohio SPCA. This dog's name was listed as "Sally". Is that her real name, or given? She's living in a nice home in Fairview Park that we just purchased in November.
We lost our extremely intelligent and loved Husky mix (Max) to cancer last January. He was only 8 or so. We knew we had to have another dog. Anyway...Sally had a litter of pups that were adopted by the time we got her. I was wondering how accurate this was as we were told that Sally is 9 mos. old. She has obviously had young ones suckling and we expect the swollen "areas" to subside. Sally is a real friendly pooch. My wife wanted another pooch for her BD and couldn't pass her by, as she leaned into her every time she went by the cage.
So Sally is with a family of 4 with a 12 and 13 year old who love her to death already.  She sits, shakes, lies down already so she's had someone who cared in the past.
Is there anything you can share concerning her past that you know of? Maybe why she was up for adoption, what her mix may be, or a more exact age? She will be a permanent part of the family, and we have her set up well. All the usual "doggy" stuff you know. I will train her to heal off the leash come spring (-10  degrees in Ohio today).
Anyway, if you can get back when you get a chance, we'd like to here from you. I'll send some pics after we touch base. Thanks, Randy

Hi,
My name is Linda .  My husband, Richard, and I adopted Hershey just this past Monday.
She is simply adorable.  She follows us everyway!!  She is slowly learning to go outside but as with any puppy it'll take time.  She is the smallest dog we've owned and we LOVE her.  She is sleeping on our bed and taking totally spoiled.  We have two cats and she loves to chase the smaller one.  She is getting used to people as we've had our son and daughter-in-law over as well as our grandson and his family.  They all love her,
If you want to keep in contact please feel free to do so.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to have her in our home.
Bless You,
Linda

Becky,
I wanted you to know that my husband and I brought both Mom and Daughter home with us yesterday. On Friday my parents (both in their late 80's) who live with us and I went to the SPCA and found those two. We had a wonderful rescue dog for 7 years who we had to put down two weeks ago. He was a truly wonderful dog and we'll miss our Ralphie for a long long time.
So that empty dog place in our home was really tugging at our hearts. Now we have two! My husband was in Cincinnati and didn't get to see them with us but when he came home and saw how excited the 3 of us were especially my parents he went right over on Saturday morning. I was working that day and we thought he would be bringing Snickers home but he said after seeing them he couldn't break up the set! So now we have both. They are so cute! Mom's great and doesn't seem to have any problems. Snickers is very timid and we'll need to work with her. We have a big yard that's fenced in and they love it! My Mom and Dad seem to have gotten younger with the excitement of our two new girls.
We did rename them. Snickers is now Ginger and Mom is now Pepper so we call them our Spice Girls.
Tomorrow I take them in for their first vet check and was hoping you might be able to give me more information. Anything about their background would be great. We have some information but not much. How did you get them? Why did they travel from Tennessee to Ohio? Lot's of questions but it doesn't matter in the end because we love them already!
Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks for sending them here however that happended.
 Norma
Pepper and Ginger are still doing great! Pepper (that's mom) is the more obedient and great to work with. Ginger is timid and stubborn. Jim and I are going to take them both to obedience class. I think this will help with some of the stubborn stuff. We want to keep socializing them around people and other dogs too! Anyway we love these two gals and they've been great doggie therapy especially for my Dad who usually has them both in his lap.
 Take Care,
Norma

Hi Becky,

I hope you're having a good new year.  We got pounded with snow this past weekend (about a foot) and I figured it was time for a new picture!  See attached.

Rocky is doing well-at 50 pounds he is bigger than Skrappy.  They are best friends and I wanted to thank you again for your great 'find'.  They love running around in the snow-we have so much here they have to 'hop' around-kinda funny.

I took them a couple weeks ago to see Santa-and of course they took a cute pic!  Rocky is not shy at all anymore-he's almost too friendly (is there a such thing?)!  He's getting better about staying out of things but still needs to watched from time to time.

Hope all is well with you and thanks again,

Evan

I adopted Lizzie about 2 months ago from a shelter in Brooklyn, a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio.  I had been looking to adopt for a few weeks and looked at a few shelters before I found Cinnamon-Sugar (what we named her). She was such a sweet dog from the beginning!  She cuddles up next to me every night, and she travels with me wherever I can take her.  I remember the first time I tried to walk her, she was afraid of cars, loud noises, other people, and sometimes other dogs.  She has improved so much in such a short time!  She just needed a little patience. Now, she doesn't mind cars, will sniff at other people (although she still won't let many people touch her), and loves other dogs. We live near a system of metroparks- kind of like a wildlife reserve- where I take Sugar to 'hunt' - she loves sniffing out rabbits, raccoons, and even deer- and she's fantastic at it.  I also take her to a nearby football field where she can run- and run and run. She even likes playing with a frisbee (which she used to be afraid of). Recently, I've been taking her to dog parks to socialize her with other people and dogs, and she's doing very well. I think in 6 months she'll probably have worked through most of her fears.  To be honest, I'm not a city person and and need time to adjust to new situations and people myself, so we're a great pair. After a few minor kinks, the vet here has given her a clean bill of health.  You'll be happy to know she'll let my brother and my boyfriend pet her. My family also has 2 other rescued dogs who have helped her transition.  In the fall I'll be going back to school in a rural area where she'll have tons of room to run.
Thanks so much for fostering her!  She's a great addition to my family. If you have any other questions, feel free to reply!

Morning!  I adopted your collie puppy this past Monday .  He was named 'foxy' but I thought 'Rocky' would be better.  He was extremely shy but that is what made me choose him.  He has a big brother 'Skrappy'-I adopted him from the same shelter 2.5 years ago.  They love to run and play in the backyard.  Rocky is still in the chewing stage but other than that he is good.  They get along perfectly.

All the shelter knew was that he is a 'collie mix'...do you know anything else about him?  I will be taking him to my vet soon to get him checked out...especially the sores on his gums (the shelter said they're warts and they will go away but I need to get a second opinion).

Thanks for the pup...he is happy and will be a great companion to me and Skrappy here in Cleveland.

Have a good holiday weekend,

Evan

Hi Becky,
Thank you so much for sending Lori to us.  She is in a great "forever" home,
and is now apart of the Hopkins family.  I have attached a couple of pics for you to see how big she is getting.  We decided to call  her Penny.  We got her on Feb.6, 2009 and boy is she getting big.  She is so much fun and learns fast.  She has only a few accidents in the house and loves to sleep at the bottom of our beds.  So we do not put her in the cage at night.  She makes it through the night without having to go out.  The only time we put her in the cage is when none of us can be home.  Usually one of us is always around.  When she has to go into her cage, she goes right in without any problem.  When we come home she goes crazy and starts jumping all over the place.  She still is in the chewing stage so we supplied her with a lot of chew toys.  Now I have to get garbage cans with lids because she will get all the paper and rip it apart.  She is so funny.  We really do love her!  She goes jogging with my daughter and I.  So she gets plenty of exercise.
My name is Lynn, my husband's name is Jonathan.  I am a special education teacher and work with children who are emotionally disturbed.  Jonathan works a social worker for "kids at risk".  We have 3 children;  Heather who is 21, will be graduating from Bowling Green University with a social work degree, Emily is 19 yrs. and is in her 1rst year of college and working on a special ed. degree too, and lastly is Jonnie, he is 11 yrs old and in the 5th. grade.  He is the athlete of our family.
Well I hope you enjoy the pics and I can always send more as Penny gets older.
                                                                    Thank you again
                                                                     The Hopkins Family

I just wanted to email the photos of the three dogs we have adopted from you already, including Joe the Doxie puppy. Have a great day. Keep in touch.
