Northeast Ohio SPCA- Our Sister No Kill Shelter

What was your impression of the NEOSPCA? This question was answered by an adopter. See below:
The place was clean and all the animals seemed to be well cared for, food, water, clean cages. The place is old and in an old neighborhood but the volunteers really seem dedicated. There were a lot of people looking at dogs and one man had adopted a little Shepard/collie looking dog –very little. Another woman had just adopted a dog but I did not see it. I did not get to talk to Anita who was very busy and they had Mia in the back room area so she would not get taken by anyone else. So we got to see this area also. This area was warehouse/garage like and full of stuff but neat and clean—old---.Mia had food and water. We were told she had been given flea stuff and wormed. Their policy is that if the dog does not work out---call and bring it back---no refund but pick out another within six months.
One volunteer was busy cutting apart newspapers into single sheets to use in the cages, other volunteers were walking the dogs outside in a grassy area (apartment building lawn) out back and carried poop bags to clean up right away. The hallway was lined with cages of all sizes (empty) with clean bedding inside. There was a room that I think is where they spay or neuter--- old, not your dream facility but I think adequate—did not get to see inside as the lights were off and door mostly closed.
There were lots of people looking at the puppies and young dogs—in fact I was surprised by all the activity. They had a sign out front saying “the new puppies have arrived” The women who helped us were very nice and seemed to care.
You have to fill out an adoption form stating “no research” etc and an acknowledgment that the dogs have come from TN and you must have your Vet check them etc.
One volunteer was scrubbing and sanitizing crates and cages. All the dogs were in cages that were roomy enough and indoors-no outdoor runs. They were warm and dry.
I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about this place before I saw it – wondered about the fact that there were so many dogs up here needing adoption –how could they be doing this – well I guess because it is in a highly populated area and they keep costs down and have lots of volunteers. So I would say you can rest easy knowing your pups are being well cared for and given a second chance – not at the Hilton but at Motel Six.
Letters and Pictures from Homes in Ohio
Hi Donna,
As I was cleaning today, I came across my records from my
adoption of "Martin" in March of 2007. I live in Cleveland,
Ohio and I was in a shelter looking for a kitten for a
friend of mine. Well.......I fell in LOVE with "Martin"
and I HAD to go home and bring in my two other dogs to meet
him and see how they all interacted. Needless to say, I now
have three beautiful, loving, spoiled, big babies.
"Casey"...sorry, the name "Martin" had to go, it just did
not fit him, Casey was the most gentle, sweet big baby in
that cage. When I approached him, he put his big paw on me
in the most gentle manner.....my heart was his! I love them
all dearly, but Casey....he is just so needy and I sneak in
as much extra loving as I can. The other two get jealous,
but Casey can outrun them LOL.....Casey and my male 5yr old
German Shepherd, Kai, do laps in my fenced in back yard.
Casey and my 7 yr. old female shepherd mix Chloe, spend
hours together and she cleans him and lays with him like she
is his mother. When they are outside, they play together
more like a wrestling team, with Casey grabbing her by the
scruff of the neck. She has plenty of padding so it works
out well!
Please understand. Casey is a character. He is a thief. He
silently will take items and run outside with them. My cell
phone was missing for about a week this winter......I did
find it.....in the snow...of course I now have a new cell
phone. He does not like to poop in public. It was a
momentous occasion when my daughter and I actually saw him
in the way back part of the back yard, in the overgrown part
(on purpose overgrown) and he was seen actually pooping! It
is now one of "our family jokes". "I saw Casey poop today!".
Casey loved to rearrange my plants......meaning as I plant
them, he unplants them.
When we first got Casey, he was a tad on the skinny side.
Now you would think he would eat anything.....oh no,not
Casey. He was and still is particular about his dog food. My
dogs only ate dry food. Quality brands, but dry. Needless to
say, they now all three eat the dry food with either canned
dog food mixed in (Casey gets half the can, the other two
get a quarter can each) twice a day...or I make dog food for
them....a rice, chicken, turkey, liver, gizzards, mixture or
combo of any of the above mentioned ingredients and this is
added to the dry food. I cook for them more than I cook for
myself. My friends just shake their heads at me.
Casey is a yellow lab/husky mix we think. He has a blue
eye and a brown eye. The vet figures he was about 10 months
to a year old when we got him, so he is now about 3.and he
is about 80 pounds! all muscle! I always wondered what his
past was. He is so strong and in the beginning, he would try
to escape out of the fenced in area in our backyard. Or when
at the park,he was always heading to the wooded area, with
or without the rest of his pack. My daughter and I joked
that he was heading back to Tennessee......he is extremely
fast and agile......we have a 6 foot fence, otherwise I am
sure he would have jumped it, just because he could . LOL.
He does not like loud music or rain. he has a dog house and
he uses it. he prefers mostly to be outside.......you just
don't know how I have to coax him inside, except if it is
going to rain or if the neighbors are louder than usual. .
And he knows ahead of time if it will rain. He is my weather
forecaster. He loves the snow! He also prefers it under 80
degrees..... His range is 20 thru 80 degrees. I promise to
send pictures....and if we are in the area...I will bring
him to see you all. We still stop in at the shelter we got
him from and show him off. Actually, I take all three. I
love them all and show them off as much as I can. Most
places I can handle them by myself. They all love going to
the vet. I cannot take them to a pet store by myself, they
get too excited. I found out really quickly, I can take one
of them places with me, but I can never leave one at home
alone. They are truly a bonded pack. If we are somewhere and
one of them is not with the others......they look for the
other one til they are all together again. For instance,
getting their nails trimmed. It works out better if we
separate the one being worked on, but then the other two
need to be with the missing one and they go look for him or
her.
I cannot tell you how much love and happiness Casey has
given me. I bought a tag from an animal group for Casey that
says "I rescued a human". That says it all. Thank you for
rescuing Casey for me.

Becky,
I wanted you to know that my husband and I brought both Mom and Daughter home with us yesterday. On Friday my parents (both in their late 80's) who live with us and I went to the SPCA and found those two. We had a wonderful rescue dog for 7 years who we had to put down two weeks ago. He was a truly wonderful dog and we'll miss our Ralphie for a long long time. So that empty dog place in our home was really tugging at our hearts. Now we have two! My husband was in Cincinnati and didn't get to see them with us but when he came home and saw how excited the 3 of us were especially my parents he went right over on Saturday morning. I was working that day and we thought he would be bringing Snickers home but he said after seeing them he couldn't break up the set! So now we have both. They are so cute! Mom's great and doesn't seem to have any problems. Snickers is very timid and we'll need to work with her. We have a big yard that's fenced in and they love it! My Mom and Dad seem to have gotten younger with the excitement of our two new girls. We did rename them. Snickers is now Ginger and Mom is now Pepper so we call them our Spice Girls. Tomorrow I take them in for their first vet check and was hoping you might be able to give me more information. Anything about their background would be great. We have some information but not much. How did you get them? Why did they travel from Tennessee to Ohio? Lot's of questions but it doesn't matter in the end because we love them already! Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks for sending them here however that happended. Norma Pepper and Ginger are still doing great! Pepper (that's mom) is the more obedient and great to work with. Ginger is timid and stubborn. Jim and I are going to take them both to obedience class. I think this will help with some of the stubborn stuff. We want to keep socializing them around people and other dogs too! Anyway we love these two gals and they've been great doggie therapy especially for my Dad who usually has them both in his lap. Take Care, Norma
I just wanted to email the photos of the three dogs we have adopted from
you already, including Joe the Doxie puppy. Have a great day. Keep
in touch.
